A vistoria de On/Off Hire Survey é realizada no início e no término de um contrato de afretamento (charter), registrando de forma detalhada as condições do navio no momento da entrega e da devolução.

Já a vistoria de Off Hire verifica se o navio está sendo devolvido nas condições acordadas no início do contrato — incluindo reparo de avarias ou desgaste além do normal — e apura a quantidade de combustível remanescente a bordo.
A comparação direta entre os dois laudos (On Hire e Off Hire) é o que sustenta, tecnicamente, o acerto de contas entre armador e afretador.
The Off Hire survey verifies whether the vessel is being redelivered in the condition agreed at the start of the charter — including repair of damage or wear beyond fair use — and determines the quantity of bunkers remaining on board.
The direct comparison between the two reports (On Hire and Off Hire) is what technically supports the final settlement between owner and charterer.
